Lane Change Assistant on the BMW iX helps you seamlessly change lanes on multi-lane highways. It’s a driver assistance program that integrates with the blind spot monitor.
The Lane Change Assistant is an added safety layer when changing lanes. It’s only applicable on fast, multi-lane highways.
Lane Change Assistant is a great way to ensure a smooth lane change. However, you shouldn’t rely on it. Always make sure to manually check your blind spot before executing a maneuver.
On this page, you’ll find instructions on turning Lane Change Assistant on and off on the BMW iX.

How to use Lane Change Assistant on the iX

Lane Change Assistant can only be used on multi-lane roads such as freeways.
Follow these instructions to use Lane Change Assistant safely:

  1. Use the mirrors and look around to check the traffic conditions.
    • A warning light illuminates in the relevant mirror whenever a car is approaching in an adjacent lane.
    • Don’t initiate a lane change using Lane Change Assistant if it’s not safe to do so.
  2. Press and hold the turn signal stalk in the required lane change direction (down for left or up for right). Don’t hold it all the way. Move it to and hold it at the point that temporarily activates the turn signals. It should flash three times before deactivating.
    • If you try to activate Lane Change Assistant while another car is in your blind spot, your iX will intervene. Depending on your settings, it might sound a warning or intervene with your steering.
  3. After a moment, the Lane Change Assistant will automatically move your iX into the corresponding lane.
    • The instrument cluster icon also shows a green arrow when a lane change is actively happening.
    • Lane Change Assistant also helps your iX settle into position in the new lane.

Using Lane Change Assistant safely on the BMW iX

Before making a lane change, you should always check for traffic.
Although the car’s sensors constantly watch your blind spot, don’t rely on this. You should still look over your shoulder before changing lanes.
The Lane Change Assist might also not work correctly if the sensors can’t detect at least one lane edge. This could happen in:

  • Heavy rain, sleet, or snow
  • Dusty areas or dust on the sensors
  • Dirt roads
  • Poorly maintained/unpainted roads
