Best Subaru Impreza WRX Coilovers

If you want to modify your Subaru Impreza WRX, the suspension is a great place to start. Although the factory suspension on the WRX certainly holds its own, there are plenty of aftermarket options out there that can give you a little more oomph.

The coilovers vs lowering springs debate is one we discussed last week. If you read that post, you’ll know that if a boost in performance is the most important aspect of your suspension upgrade, then quality WRX coilovers are likely to be the best choice. They provide:

  • Excellent handling
  • Maximum adjustability
  • Great quality

But with so much choice out there, how can you find the best WRX coilovers for your car? Here’s our guide to four of the best.

KW Coilover Kit Variant 3

Construction type: High precision twin tube
Damper adjustment: 16 levels
Spring type: Progressive
External reservoirs: Rear
Upper mounts: Optional
Warranty: Limited lifetime

The KW Coilover Kit Variant 3 provides cutting-edge sports technology for improved performance on the road. Compression and rebound damping can be set independently so you can create your own extensive damper setup. That can influence everything from tyre grip and directional stability to steering behaviour and the handling characteristics of your WRX when it’s pushed to the limit.

The KW Variant 3 reduces the roll and pitch movements of the vehicle body during compression, to provide unadulterated directness and sportier, more responsive handling while driving. It also allows for maximum or customised lowering depending on your aesthetic and performance requirements.

The ride is only marginally firmer than the OEM suspension, delivering smooth, quiet driving on the road, and although the KW V3 is not promoted as a competition coilover, it can still hold its own the track. In our view, all that undoubtedly makes the KW V3 one of the best WRX coilovers for street drivers who enjoy the occasional track day.

BC Racing BR Series

Construction type: Mono tube
Damper adjustment: 30 levels
Spring type: Linear
External reservoirs: No
Upper mounts: Optional
Warranty: 1 year

BC Racing’s BR Series coilover kits are popular all around the world due to the fine balance they strike between affordability and quality. Just like the KW V3, at heart, the BR series is very much a street coilover, but it still holds its own on the track. One of the key benefits of the BC BR is undoubtedly the ease of installation, and once they’re fitted to your WRX, you’ll immediately notice a lot less dive when cornering.

As soon as you open the box, you’ll see BC BR coilovers are a serious piece of equipment, with a large 53mm diameter damper, which is more than you’ll find on many other coilover kits. That increases the volume of oil contained in the unit, which reduces the peak temperature to significantly improve damper performance.

These coilovers boast some excellent features including 30 levels of damping adjustment, a large range of height adjustment and pillow-ball top mounts. BC Racing also has an excellent reputation as a mid-range manufacturer, making this a low-cost coilover kit that’s worthy of serious consideration.

Cusco Competition Zero 3

Construction type: Mono tube
Damper adjustment: 24 levels
Spring type:
External reservoirs: Yes
Upper mounts: Optional
Warranty:

This is the first WRX coilover kit we’re looking at that’s designed specifically for competition driving, making it best suited to track enthusiasts who also rely on their WRX for daily use. These competition grade coilovers are Cusco’s flagship range and are engineered to be used in conjunction with race compound tyres. They meet the demands of the lateral G forces created by racing environments such as circuit racing and time attack.

The damping force is adjustable up to 24 levels and the fully adjustable ride height feature retains full shock stroke length and spring reload. It also comes with camber adjustable pillow-ball upper mounts and/or rubber upper seat depending on your requirements. If performance on the track is your primary objective and money is no object, we think this is the best WRX coilover for you.

HKS Hipermax IV GT

Construction type: Mono tube
Damper adjustment: 30 levels
Spring type: Linear
External reservoirs: No
Upper mounts: Included
Warranty: 1 Year

The HKS Hipermax IV GT coilovers take a slight diversion from the norm, coming ready to bolt into your WRX straight out of the box so there’s no need to set the ride height or adjust your damping after installation. They come with a relatively tame 3/4” drop, which provides a comfortable ride on the road. Of course, there’s plenty of scope to adjust your ride height further should you want to, with a maximum 1.3” drop on the front and 2.4” at the rear.

Like the KW V3s, the IV GTs are extremely quiet, with no clunking or creaking, and despite being marginally firmer than the WRX OEM suspension, we think they actually deliver a smoother ride.

So, which is best?

That really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to boost the handling and performance of a car you drive every day but still want a smooth, quiet ride, the KW Variant 3 coilover kit is very tough to beat. If you’re looking for an affordable WRX coilover kit, the BC BR Series offers exceptional value that we think can’t be beaten. When it comes down to competition-worthy performance, the Cusco Competition Zero 3 really is the only choice.
